Maternal Death Rates Rising
Maternal death rates rising:
In 2004 the U.S. maternal mortality rate rose to 13 deaths per 100,000 live births.This is only the second time since 1977 that the rate has gone over 10. (National Center for Health Statistics.)
The increase could be linked to better record-keeping or a rising Caesarean section rate. Cesarean section is major surgery and carries with it all the risks of major surgery. Anesthesia complications and infections are but two of the complications seen more often when the birth is a cesarean.
